    It is a well established fact that the Konkanis scattered throughout the world are westernized. With rapid globalization, there is hardly a future for smaller groups and languages. Konkani is no exception. Younger generations of Konkanis living outside of Konkan belt hardly speak Konkani at home. In old times, due to poor transportation in India and social isolation, the Konkanis adhered to their language, deities, and customs which made them aware of their identity.     KONKANI

    Meaning

    "Kum" represents mother earth and "Kana", dust or an atom (from Sanskrit). Over years, worshippers of mother earth were recognized as Konkanis. One can safely say that the early generation of Konkanis were farmers, a profession that predominated the community till recent times.

    Language

    Konkani is an Indo-European language spoken in India by about 3-4 million people according to the 2001 census. It is the state language of Goa and 57% of the population speak the language currently. In additon to Goa, there are substantial speakers of the language in coastal Karnataka, coastal Maharashtra and Kerala.

    Legecy

    Originating about the tenth century, Konkani has evolved slowly over time based upon the migrations of the community. Some scriptural references indicate that a strain of speakers lived in coastal areas of the west coast. The earliest acheaological evidence is to be found at the foot of the Jain Gomateswara statue at Sravanabelagola in Karnataka.

    Our History

    The Konkanies are said to have originally hailed from central Asia. According to the available evidence around 4000 B. C. they were settled to an agrarian life, supplemented by cattle grazing, on the banks of river Sraswathi which is a tributary of River Indus.

    The Konkani culture has suffered many attacks by the Muslim invaders, Marathas and majorly by the Portuguese

    The Konkani community, however, rebounded from every setback. With the end of the British and Portuguese Empires in India, the community has made significant strides.
